How ceramic painting works: from brush to finished work

Pottery painting is easy, creative and accessible – even if you've never painted ceramics before. Here we'll walk you through how pottery painting works step by step , from picking up your brush to collecting your finished, fired work.

Whether you are painting a mug, bowl or plate, the process follows the same basic principles.

Steg 1: Välj ditt keramiska föremål

You start by choosing a finished pottery item, for example:

  • mug or cup

  • bowl or plate

  • dish or decorative object

The objects are made for ceramic painting and adapted to withstand glazing and firing.

Step 2: Paint with ceramic colors

Once you have chosen your object, it is time to paint. You use specially adapted pottery colors that change in the kiln and only get their final color after firing.

You can:

  • paint freely

  • create patterns

  • write text or name

  • use templates and techniques

You don't need any prior knowledge – staff are often on site for tips and inspiration.

When the painting is complete, the object is glazed. The glazing:

  • protects the decor

  • gives a glossy or satin finish

  • makes ceramics durable and long-lasting

This step is done by the studio to ensure a smooth and sustainable result.

Step 5: Firing in a pottery kiln

After glazing, the ceramic is fired in a kiln at a very high temperature. During the firing:

  • melts the glaze

  • the colors develop their final shade

  • the object becomes strong and useful

It is this process that makes your painted ceramics dishwasher safe and ready for everyday use.

Step 6: Pick up your finished work

After 2 weeks, your piece will be ready for pick-up. You will then have a personal pottery object that you have decorated yourself – perfect for use at home or as a gift.

Is pottery painting difficult?

No. Pottery painting is one of the most beginner-friendly creative activities. You work at your own pace, without the need for perfection, and the result is always unique.

Summary

Pottery painting is a clear and safe process: choose → paint → glaze → fire → pick up . This makes the activity perfect for children, adults, couples and groups who want to create something personal in a relaxed environment.
